Roulette is a fun and exciting table game and one of the few table games where the primary wager has such a huge payoff amount. Unlike blackjack where you are basically playing for an even-money return, or craps where if you want a huge payout you have to take extremely poor odds, playing roulette offers you the chance of a 35-to-1 payoff with each wager.
There are two forms of roulette; American –which contains a zero and a double zero—and European roulette which contains only a single zero. Obviously a French roulette wheel gives more of an advantage to the player as they are receiving 35-to-1 odds on a 36-to-1 chance, while an American roulette wheel offers 35-to-1 odds on a 37-to-1 shot due to the additional zero.
Given the choice you should always choose the French roulette wheel over the American, unless the casino has changed the odds so that they offer the same payouts regardless of the number of zeros on the wheel. There are a number of different wagers playing can make in roulette; anything from betting a single number at 35-to-1, to betting black or red at 1-to-1, and virtually anything in between like betting a whole row, two adjoining numbers, a quartet of numbers, or other combinations of numbers. With one exception –betting the First 5 numbers—every roulette bet has the exact same house edge, so it becomes a matter of whether you want to win less often but more money when you do win; or if you want to win more often but win less money each time.
In order to place a bet on roulette you must place your wager PRIOR to the ball being dropped –obviously this is simplified online as you simply click ready when you are done placing your wagers. In a casino the croupier will announce bets are off. You may also place as many bets as you wish on any variety of numbers or number combinations, and all of your bets together must reach the table minimum. So if the table minimum is $1 you can place a $1 wager, or four $.25 wagers, or any combination thereof to reach the table minimum. Roulette players like the slightly slower pace of the game, and the ability to bet on whims without much thought –and the 35-to-1 payouts don’t hurt either!
