Players who like to “roll the bones” as craps is known, can find the rules of the game, and the numerous wagers offered, quite overwhelming at first, and this is what keeps many players from participating in a craps game. What we have done is simplified the entire process so you are aware of the basic rules of craps. There are a number of different bets you can place on a craps table and in a separate article we have listed the most advantageous of these bets; here I will outline the basic rules of craps covering the “Pass Line” wager. In order to place subsequent bets during a round of craps it’s important that you place an initial Pass Line wager –or a “Don’t Pass” wager. When you place a Pass Line wager one of the following three things will happen: If the shooter rolls a7 or 11 you will win even money on your wager; If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 you will lose your initial wager; If the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 the pass line marker will be turned off, and the initial roll becomes known as the “point”. At this point you can now place “Odds” wagers and other bets at the craps table.
Here are a few other basic rules you should be aware of before you decide to play at a craps table: - In craps players take turn throwing the dice until a player “craps out”; although players are allowed to pass the dice to another player at any point.
- You will notice that craps has a lot of slang and terminology, and like every player before you, you will have to learn this strange language over time.
- When it is your turn to throw the dice you are supposed to throw the dice far enough that they rebound off the other side of the table. It is also against the rules to slide the dice down the table.
Craps Etiquette
- Don't put drinks on the table, and don’t sit or lean on any part of the table.
- It is perfectly fine to solicit help from the dealer, but beware of players offering advice
- On a funnier note: Do not tell the other players you are a first time player if you are a man! Male “virgins” in craps are supposedly unlucky, while the opposite is supposed to be true for females.
